At the start of the test you will be asked one show me and one tell me question. One or both questions answered incorrectly will be marked as one driver error.

Q1. Show me where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would know if you had sufficient oil.

A1. Open bonnet, identify dipstick and explain that you would check the level against the min/max marks.

 

Q2. Show me where you would check the engine coolant and tell me how you would check the level.

A2. Open bonnet, identify header tank and explain that you would check the level against the min/max marks.

 

Q3. Show me where you would check the brake fluid and tell me how you would know that you have a safe level.

A3. Open bonnet, identify reservoir and explain that you would check level against the min/max marks.

 

Q4. Show me where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the level.

A4. Open bonnet, identify reservoir and explain that you would open/check level as necessary.

 

Q5. Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working, I can assist you.

A5. Ask examiner to stand behind car, switch on ignition (not engine) and press brake pedal.

 

Q6. Show me how you would check that the indicators are working.

A6. Switch on indicators/hazard lights and check round car.

 

Q7. Show me how you would check that the horn is working.

A7. Press it.

 

Q8. Show me how you would check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear, make sure you keep safe control of the car.

A8. Firmly press footbrake, release and fully re-apply parking brake. Explain that when you release the button it secures itself and has not reached the end of it’s working travel.  

 

Q9. Show me how you would use the windscreen washers and wipers.

A9. Switch ignition on (not engine) and operate switch.

 

Q10. Show me how you would use the demister controls to clear the front and rear screens.

A10. Switch ignition on (not engine) and set all relevant controls.

 

Q11. Show me how you would switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and tell me how you would know that the main beam is on.

A11. Switch on dipped, switch to main beam and identify main beam warning light.

 

Q12. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and tell me when you would use them.

A12. Switch on dipped headlights, switch on rear fogs. Explain that you would use when visibility is reduced to 100m or less.

 

Q13. Show me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working.

A13. Explain that if it becomes heavy it is not working. Gentle pressure on steering to start engine or turning wheel after move off will make it clear if the power steering is working.

 

Q14. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before you start a journey.

A14. Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Test them as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.

 

Q15. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how you would check them.

A15. Manufacturers guide. Use a reliable pressure gauge. Check and adjust when tyres are cold. Don’t forget the spare tyre. Remember to fit the valve caps.

 

Q16.Tell how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

A16. Adjust so that the centre of the rigid part is at least as high as the eyes or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.

 

Q17. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

A17. No cuts or bulges. Minimum of 1.6mm of tread across the central 3/4 of the width of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

 

Q18. Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail-lights are working. (No need to exit vehicle)

A18. Explain that you would switch them on then walk round the vehicle to check.

 

Q19. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system.

A19. A warning light will illuminate on the instrument panel.
